What’s My Age Again?! – Age Demographics on Social Media

Social media can be key to getting your company out there and heard – but it can be tricky. Age demographics on social media are easily overlooked, but can help you figure out how to cater to different users to get the most out of your posts. If your target market is Generation X, you wouldn’t want to put all your time and effort into posting on a platform that mainly teenagers use. Here’s a quick guide of age demographics on social media, so you can get a feel of which platforms your business should be using!

Facebook

While Facebook used to be for the youngsters, older Millennials and Gen X have taken over the platform in recent years. Facebooks largest age group is 35 to 44 year olds. The 65 and older age group is also the fastest growing group on the platform.

Instagram

Instagram is the most liked social media platform for the younger generations. The 25 to 34 and 18 to 24 age groups are almost tied for largest age demographic on the platform. Instagram can be a great tool to reach Gen Z and young Millennials.

Twitter

Though Twitter is starting to see a fall in users, 18 to 29 year olds still love to use the platform. This is definitely not a platform you want to use to target older folks, as such a small number of them use it.

TikTok

Just about everyone is on TikTok these days, but it’s no surprise the younger generations are dominating the platform. TikTok’s biggest age group is 16 to 24 year olds. This is a great platform to use if you want a big reach; you’re videos could end up on just about anyones For You Page.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn has a wide variety of age groups on the platform, but it’s the 25 to 34 year olds who seem to be on it the most. 30 to 49 year olds spend a good amount of time on LinkedIn as well, connecting with coworkers and potential networking opportunities.

Hey guys, it’s Anna with Metro Nova Creative and today I wanted to talk to you guys about age demographics on social media. Social media can be key to getting your company out there and heard, but it also can be tricky. Different platforms have different users and you need to know how to cater to each one to get the most out of your posts.

If you’re marketing to Gen Z, you wouldn’t want to spend most of your time and energy posting on Facebook. Facebook’s largest age demographic is 35 to 44 year olds, mostly older Millennials. The 65 and older age group is the fastest growing age group on the platform as well. So you don’t want to leave those grandparents out either.

If you want to target more of Gen Z and younger Millennials, Instagram is the place for you. 31% of Instagram users are between 25 and 34. The 18 to 24 age range isn’t far behind either, with 30% of the platform’s users.

Twitter would also be a great platform to target the younger generations. 42% of Twitter users are between the ages of 18 and 29, though the platform is starting to see a shrink in their numbers.

Now let’s talk about TikTok. Just about everybody is on TikTok these days, but it’s no surprise that the younger generations are dominating the platform. 53% of TikTok users are between the ages of 16 and 24. The platform is huge and overwhelming, but can be extremely beneficial if used right.

LinkedIn is the last platform I want to talk about. LinkedIn has a majority of users between 25 and 34 year sold, but another large chunk is between 30 and 49. So the older generations are who you would want to target on LinkedIn.

These age demographics are important to consider when deciding which social media platform you want to use for your company. You wouldn’t want to post on a social media platform that your target audience isn’t going to see.
