Choosing the Right Platform
Today, we’re going to talk about how to design a website. The first thing you have to ask is what are you going to use it for? If it’s for a small business and you’re just getting started and you don’t necessarily have the budget to hire a professional web designer, you can use a platform like Wix or Squarespace or something like that where it’s a DIY kind of drag-and-drop template builder.
So that’s going to be great for maybe an organization or a small business business that you’re not quite sure what to do with it. Or again, if you’re just getting started and you just don’t have it in the budget to hire a professional.
Why Choose WordPress?
If you do have it in the budget to hire a professional like us, I would definitely suggest going WordPress. It’s just a wider platform. It’s definitely the one that’s going to scale the most for your business and give you the most options as far as flexibility and use.
Crafting a User-Friendly Experience
Once you’ve figured out what kind of platform you’re going to use, you’re going to think about the user experience and how your customers are going to navigate your website, and really how your business is going to get success from that website.
So three things that we always think about when we’re building out websites, especially core pages like the home page or pages that talk about services, we always talk about three things.
- Inform the User: Tell them what you’re talking about. What am I looking at? Give a little bit of information.
- Build Trust: Add some testimonies from customers or some blogs you’ve written that say that you are the authority in your subject and you understand your business. That gives people a warm and fuzzy and makes them know they’re hiring a professional.
- Guide to Action or Call to Action: Is there a contact form or a phone number they can click easily so that they can get in touch with you and hire you right away?
Mobile-Friendly Design Matters
When building a website, the most important things you need to know are what platform are you going to go with, how are you going to communicate with your customers, and make sure it’s mobile-friendly. 78% of the people that do Google searches do it on their phone. And if your website’s not really mobile-friendly, Google is going to dock you in points as far as how you rank for certain search terms.
