Honoring History Through Design
When the City of Fredericksburg set out to create the Fredericksburg Civil Rights Trail, the goal was bigger than signage and symbols, it was about telling stories that shaped the city and the nation. Metro Nova Creative was honored to be selected to design the branding, marketing materials, and visual identity for this historic project.
From the beginning, we knew this wasn’t just a design job, it was a responsibility.

Research, Respect, and Real Conversations
Before a single sketch was drawn, our team spent time listening and learning. We interviewed community stakeholders, museum specialists, and historians, gathering insight into the complex and emotional history surrounding Fredericksburg’s role in the Civil Rights Movement.
We walked the same streets that now make up the trail. We read stories, reviewed archives, and had deep conversations about the truths and struggles that shaped our city. This groundwork ensured that every design choice was made with intention and authenticity.
Building from the Foundation of FXBG
As the City of Fredericksburg established an existing brand, we wanted the Civil Rights Trail to feel connected to the broader FXBG city brand while also standing proudly on its own. Using the foundational city branding as the anchor, we developed a visual identity that balanced continuity and individuality.
The result was a design system that complements Fredericksburg’s overall tourism and cultural identity, while elevating a vital story within it.
The Symbolism Behind the Design
One of the most meaningful elements in the branding is the checker diamond pattern. This motif draws inspiration from the quilting traditions of enslaved people in Fredericksburg. In many cultures, quilting was not only a form of art but also a way to preserve history and communicate stories through symbols.
The diamond’s four sides represent the cycle of birth, life, death, and the next life, a symbol of transformation and resilience. We felt this deeply reflected the ongoing evolution of civil rights, a movement that continues to grow and adapt with each generation.
Beyond the Logo: Bringing the Trail to Life
The Fredericksburg Civil Rights Trail is more than a logo, it’s an experience. Metro Nova Creative designed a comprehensive suite of materials to support the launch and long-term presence of the trail:
- A walking tour guidebook that takes visitors through each location with historical context and storytelling.
- Flags and banners displayed throughout downtown Fredericksburg during Black History Month to promote the trail.
- Marketing materials and signage that make the history accessible, engaging, and visually consistent across all touchpoints.
A Legacy of Storytelling
For Metro Nova Creative, this project wasn’t just about design, it was about connection, community, and respect for the past. The Fredericksburg Civil Rights Trail stands today as a reminder of the city’s complex history and its ongoing journey toward equality and understanding.
We’re proud to have played a part in helping Fredericksburg tell this story with the dignity and depth it deserves.
